Chapter Sixteen
Rob came in late and found her hunched over her computer at the table. A small meatloaf sat on the stove with a pot of rice and a plate of sliced cucumbers nearby. She looked up when he kissed the top of her head and set his things down on the spare chair. He picked up a plate and loaded it up with food, before coming back and sitting down.
âAnything interesting?â he asked between bites.
âMm. Yes. A couple of things. Thereâs a missing person case that sounds intriguing. May require some travel. And one that involves a plane crash.â
âWhere?â
âTupelo.â
âWhat? The birthplace of Elvis himself?â
She chuckled. âYeah. Site is in a field. The family arenât satisfied with the NTSB report.â
âSoâ¦they want you to talk to the pilot?â
âYes, essentially.â
âWell?â
âWell, while Iâm waiting for things to happen with Reggieâs case, I reckon I should take on a couple others.â
He swallowed a bite and nodded. âMakes sense. A little distance might help you see things more clearly.â
âThere is that. I feel like Iâm missing something obvious.â
He put the last bite of meatloaf in his mouth and stood with his plate. He rinsed it off and set it in the dishwasher, then started putting the leftovers away. Jenna typed a couple of emails and then closed her computer.
Rob looked up. âYouâre putting away the computer?â
âWe have to talk wedding. Your mom needs some information and I donât feel comfortable giving it all to her without talking to you first.â
âIâve had my input. Halloween. Mom and Dadâs backyard. Iâm done.â
âUh, no, youâre not.â
He yawned and stretched, then sat on the couch and said, âFine, but Iâm sitting here, where it is comfortable.â
She got up and followed him, sitting beside him.
He draped his arm about her shoulders and grinned. âThere, now we can talk.â
He kissed her and she struggled weakly for a moment. âRob⦠We need to plan what weâre going to wear.â
âI have a few ideas on that,â he said, his mouth traveling down her neck.
âRob!â She laughed and pushed against him. âIâm serious.â
He sighed. âI am, too. Jenna, I donât care. You tell me what to wear and where to stand and Iâll do my part.â
âThatâs not fair, leaving it all to me.â
âI always heard that was every womanâs dreamâto get to plan her wedding her way.â
âI never thought Iâd find someone Iâd want to marry. So, this is all new to me.â
âOk. Well, how about we just go kind of traditional? Iâll wear a suit and you wear a dress. You already ordered one, right?â
âOkay, yes, but thereâs more to it than that. A little more detailâ¦â
He shrugged. âI donât know⦠Whatâs your favorite color?â
âCobalt blue.â
âOkay, cobalt blue flowers for your bouquet, matching tie for me. Some plain black suit for me, simple floor-length dress for you. Are we done?â
She sighed, but the image was starting to clarify in her mind. âYeah, I think I can work with that.â
He kissed her and grinned. âSee? Nothing to worry about.â
She smiled back. âThereâs always something to worry about.
